Food Science Extension Outreach Program
Come to you
They go out to businesses but could possibly come out to you The current focus of the University of Georgia Food Science Extension Outreach Program is to provide the public and the food industry with unbiased, research-based food safety education. Our workshops and on-site training programs enable businesses in the food industry to develop and implement a food safety or HACCP plan tailored to their own operation, thus minimizing the risk of contamination of their food product by human pathogens.
Time for presentation: 55 minutes The “Does It Really Matter?” teaching module is designed to serve as either an introduction to High School Chemistry and/or Physical Science, or as a review. The module focuses on one of the core concepts of high school chemistry and physical science, the properties of four of the states of matter – solid, liquid, gas, and plasma. The Bio-Bus staff will present a series of demonstrations which will illustrate and reinforce these concepts. For safety reasons, all demonstrations with liquid nitrogen and dry-ice are performed by our staff only.Students will explore the following:
Atomic structure of elements and their placement on the periodic table
Density
Molecular structure within the different states of matter
Examples of phase changes and the proper names associated with the changes
Superconductivity by achieving thermal equilibrium
Students will also perform an experiment which illustrates the law of conservation, potential energy, and kinetic energy. If time permits, students will be able to create and keep oobleck in a bag (a non-Newtonian fluid). They will observe how the substance acts as both a solid and a liquid. We provide a workbook for each student, to be used during the session and also as a review if the teacher wishes.
The calendar will open for the 2011-2012 school year on April 25th, 2011. The first available date is September 1st. The Bio-Bus Program is often largely booked up by Labor Day, so please get your reservation request in as soon as you know your school’s schedule. To book Bio-Bus Program visits and for other routine inquiries, please contact Genevieve Edwards, Program Manager, at 404-413-5421 or biobus@gsu.edu.

Come to you
Chemistry: Acids, Bases, and Indicators
Grade Level: 9-12
Taught: Chemistry Lab
Students: up to 30
Time for presentation: 55 minutes We will need ten minutes between sessions to cleanup and prepare for the next session. The Acids, Bases, and Indicators module is designed to educate students about chemistry and stimulate their enthusiasm for the subject. Many students view chemistry as one of the more difficult sciences, and this module is designed to convince them that chemistry is interesting, fun, and stimulating. We begin with a brief introduction to chemistry and matter. This is followed by a discussion of the fundamental properties of acids and bases. We then discuss the use off pH indicators, including litmus paper, phenolphthalein, thymol blue, and paranitrophenol as tools for determining the acid/base characteristics of compounds. The level of the discussion is tailored to the age and background of each class. Demonstrations are performed to reinforce the concepts presented, and to stimulate the students’ curiosity. The students conduct hands-on experiments designed to give them experience in scientific thinking, methodology, and laboratory safety.
The calendar will open for the 2011-2012 school year on April 25th, 2011. The first available date is September 1st. Georgia High School Outreach for Science and Technology Program thorough GA Tech An initial MSE PowerPoint presentation, along with a variety of MSE related demonstrations (Table 2) and take-home experiments were developed to exhibit to high school students by GHOST presenters. Both the initial PowerPoint presentation and associated demonstrations were organized so that they could be easily modified to meet specific curricula as appropriate for the particular classroom ie. biology, chemistry, physics, or any combination of subjects. The curriculum could also be easily tailored to address six or seven 50 minute classes or three or four approximately two hour classes for each school visit. This amounted to presenting to 100-200 students per school visit.
Grades 6-12 Aviation Outreach Four sessions of students can rotate through the program during the presentations. 50 students per session can be accommodated. A program schedule will be made to best suit your school’s needs. Class instruction includes: * Aerodynamics* Careers in Aviation* Engineering Method* Understand GPS* Sonic Booms and G-Forces

The National Science Center (NSC), located in Augusta, Georgia, takes Science on the road with its
Mobile Discovery Centers. Housed in 18-wheelers, the mobile centers travel across the country, presenting
programs designed to show young people that studying science and math is fun as well as essential to their
future. The complete program presented during a van visit consists of fun, hands-on, interactive science
demonstrations. Educational outreach is the mission of the National Science Center and The Mobile
Discovery Centers play a key role in the accomplishment of this mission by taking our programs to
schools across the nation.

The current focus of the University of Georgia Food Science Extension Outreach Program is to provide the public and the food industry with unbiased, research-based food safety education. Our workshops and on-site training programs enable businesses in the food industry to develop and implement a food safety or HACCP plan tailored to their own operation, thus minimizing the risk of contamination of their food product by human pathogens.
High School Chemistry: Does It Really 'Matter'?
Grade Level: 9-12Taught: Chemistry Lab
- Students: up to 30
Time for presentation: 55 minutesThe “Does It Really Matter?” teaching module is designed to serve as either an introduction to High School Chemistry and/or Physical Science, or as a review.
- Atomic structure of elements and their placement on the periodic table
- Density
- Molecular structure within the different states of matter
- Examples of phase changes and the proper names associated with the changes
- Superconductivity by achieving thermal equilibrium
Students will also perform an experiment which illustrates the law of conservation, potential energy, and kinetic energy. If time permits, students will be able to create and keep oobleck in a bag (a non-Newtonian fluid). They will observe how the substance acts as both a solid and a liquid. We provide a workbook for each student, to be used during the session and also as a review if the teacher wishes.
Chemistry: Acids, Bases, and Indicators
Grade Level: 9-12Taught: Chemistry Lab
- Students: up to 30
Time for presentation: 55 minutesWe will need ten minutes between sessions to cleanup and prepare for the next session.
Grade Level: 9-12
Taught: Chemistry Lab
- Students: up to 30
Time for presentation: 55 minutes, 90 minutes for gel electrophoresisIncludes fingerprinting, blood typing, and DNA analysis
An initial MSE PowerPoint presentation, along with a variety of MSE related demonstrations (Table 2) and take-home experiments were developed to exhibit to high school students by GHOST presenters.
